My favorite landmark that I enjoy is Salem Sue the worlds largest cow in New Salem, ND. It was a stop that we had to make EVERY year on our way to Medora. It was one of my Dad’s favorite places to stop and run around. It really is nothing special but it holds MANY memories that will forever remind me of those “younger years”. We have several pictures of us standing on the hooves of the cow and of course pointing at her larger than life udders. There is a great view of the wonderfully flat ND from up there as well. Thanks!

I loved following your trip- how fun! We loved the Gateway Arch and look forward to taking the family to Mt Rushmore in a couple of years.
My favorite American landmark is Stonehenge II in Texas. It’s definitely quirky…a great stop for those travelling through the Hill Country on I-10.

i would like to see the chicago bean!!!
‘Gotta go for this — my kids and I recently discovered Sweet and Sour Twizzlers and LOVE them!
My favorite landmark is Gooseberry Falls Park in Northern Minnesota. Maybe it doesn’t quite fall under the category of landmark, but it is a beautiful place to visit and kids love playing on the rock formations and getting wet by the small falling water. Afterwards, its fun to stop by Betty’s Pies (near Two Harbors, MN) and enjoy a slice of fresh baked pie. In fact, that little pie shop is also a landmark for families traveling to their cabins and/or vacationing in Northern Minnesota. Everyone loves to stop there!
There are so many options, it’s hard to choose! We haven’t been too many places so I don’t have a favorite but, we would like to take our kids to Niagra Falls and the Grand Canyon sometime.
A landmark that we have been spotting on our drive on I-95 through Providence, RI is the “Big Blue Bug”. He is a huge termite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Blue_Bug ) sitting on a building on the North side of the road. He sometimes has sunglasses or a santa hat. I think we have been pointing him out in our family since 1990.
I’ve been a road tripper before GPS and cell phones. The landmarks that always catch my eye are those that are unplanned – roadside attractions! Now that I’m married, I’ve also learned to stop at all historical markers for my hubby. My favorite landmark is the Ball of Twine in Darwin, Mn. An odd choice, I know; but it was an early date for us. I knew I’d found a keeper when he looked at me as we were driving back from town and said, “We’re about an hour from the largest ball of twine, want to go?” Now our preferred getaways are trips on a tankful to see whatever we can find in our local area.
Arches National Park – gorgeous landscapes, fabulous hiking! Good memories of traveling there with my husband (before we were married) and now with kids!

I love your recent trips. It was so much fun reading all about it! Anyway, I love to visit Niagra Falls.

I love the Redwood National Park and the Sequoia National Park. Those trees are amazing.
Gotta love that photo of you behind the wheel of the Twizzler-mobile! I could go with an expected response, like the Statue of Liberty, but if we’re being honest, I loved the world’s largest bowling pin in Tampa, FL! I mean, is there a more compelling icon of retro Americana than a 30-ft bowling pin?!

We just visited the oldest cemetery (started in 1640) in our town, the Tomac Burial Grounds. Maybe a strange choice for an “attraction”, but it was fascinating. We found markers from men who died in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Some markers were even older– just large rocks placed on the graves.
Fascinating for someone who grew up on the Northern Plains!
We visited Mount Rushmore and loved it, but the thing that really struck me was the grandeur upon which the Presidents gaze… Recommend turning your back on the Presidents (with all respect!) when you are there and looking at the amazing view!
My Favorite would also be Gooseberry Falls near Duluth MN. It is a beautiful drive and a wonderful place to visit. We visit every other year because we love it some much. We are hoping to sneak in a trip to the Black Hills yet this year so maybe we will have a new favorite place to visit??
I really love bridges, so I’m going to go with the Roebling Bridge over the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky. This bridge was sort of a prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge, and figures pretty prominently in McCullough’s -big- book about the latter span. We walked it a couple of times when we stayed in Cincy.

I finally made it to Devil’s Tower with my family on a vacation several years ago. It was definitely worth the long drive – beautiful scenery nearby – soil is ‘orange’. Tip: Watch the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” before going.
Lake Superior and all the great north woods around it are magnificent!
My favorite landmark has to be the Freedom Trail in Boston, I finally walked the trail last year when I chaperoned my sons field trip, and the guides (dressed in full colonial costume) were great, I learned so much about my home state, and got a great history lesson
My favorite landmark is probably The Royal Gorge in Colorado! Reminds me of trips with my grandparents when I was little!

Too bad that I am not a U.S. resident, but I would definitely visit Colorado if I once had the opportunity to travel there.
