Grant Wood’s Iowa

When we were driving in the hills of northeast Iowa, my son remarked, “I’m seeing a Grant Wood painting, but in real life.”

What do you think?

This is what we saw:

Northeast Iowa

Compare with Grant Wood’s Young Corn.  See any resemblance?

How about Near Sundown?

We also drove to Stone City, Iowa, where coming in from the south still looks just like Grant Wood’s Stone City, Iowa, if you can see past the trees that have grown up along the road.  And, while not entirely accurate (as the real American Gothic house is somewhere else in Iowa), it’s fun to stop and have your picture taken at an American Gothic replica.  Unfortunately, we forgot our pitchfork on this trip.

Grant Wood buffs ought to take a nice drive around Iowa.  Visit his studio in Cedar Rapids, or some of the many art museums around the state (Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Davenport, and others), and then explore the countryside to see where Wood’s inspiration came from.  You just may see it come to life, as my son did.

I see it! How cool. One thing we did while on the east coast this summer, was look at scenery like that painted by Edward Hopper ’cause kiddo had done a report on him. Love travel and art mixing together.

Ah, another good example. It’s great to introduce kids to art in ways that interest them.

I am currently taking an art history class and while doing some research I discovered your blog. Your son has a great eye! I am going to show your picture to my professor. He was trying to explain to the class how much Grant Wood’s “Young Corn” painting looked like rural Iowa, and this picture says it all! Thanks for a wonderful blog.
