Memorial Day Weekend Ideas

It’s hard to believe that we’re down to the last few days of school.  By Friday afternoon, we’ll have begun the season of summer vacation, where adventures abound.  We have a science camp at The Works on our calendar, as well as swimming lessons, a trip to see family, and a couple of camping weekends, but there will still be plenty of time for day trips.

First up: Memorial Day Weekend, which is just around the corner.  Do you have plans for the weekend?  If you’re in Minnesota, these are some ideas you might want to consider.

  • Many of Minnesota’s state historical sites are open seasonally and kick off their summer this weekend.  One of our family goals this summer is to visit the seven sites we haven’t seen yet (Comstock House, Folsom House, Marine Mill, Mille Lacs Trading Post, Minnehaha Depot, Mayo House, and Lac Qui Parle Mission).  Do you have a favorite MNHS site?
  • There are only a few days left to take advantage of my exclusive BOGO deal from The Works.  It’s one of our family favorites, and a great place to keep the kids learning during the summer.  (They’ll have so much fun that they won’t think it’s work.)
  • If it’s too hot outside, or the forecast is for rain and you’re looking for an indoor activity, check out Goldstar * half-price tickets to theater, concerts, comedy and sports for shows at the Children’s Theatre Company this weekend.
  • Is camping your thing?  There are still a few openings for camping reservations this weekend at Minnesota’s state parks.  We enjoyed camping at Lake Shetek and Fort Ridgely last year; this year we have Lake Louise and Sibley State Parks in mind.
  • Museums: Ben Franklin is at the Minnesota History Center for a few more weekends, and the Dead Sea Scrolls are at the Science Museum of Minnesota.  Our family enjoyed both of these special, limited-time exhibitions.
  • Memorial Day.  It’s not just a weekend for having fun.  Please take the time to pause for reflection about the meaning of this holiday.  Many communities have programs or cemetery ceremonies that provide the opportunity to remember what Memorial Day is all about.

What are your plans for the weekend?  Enjoy, and stay safe, no matter what you do.
