On the Farm: Baby Corn Plants
The view outside my window is changing. 10 weeks ago it was two feet of snow. On April 20, the field in front of my house was worked up, and it was planted the next day. That was followed by a dry spell, and then some cold and rainy weather. When the temperatures warmed up after the rain, the plants started peeking out, and they will grow quickly this week with 70-degree temperatures.
Here’s what a week-old corn plant looks like. (For size perspective, those are grass clippings near it.)
The plants within a row are spaced just a few inches apart.
You can now see the rows of corn. This is a common sight this time of year.
Remember the neighbor’s wheat field in the background? It’s a lot taller and greener now (above) than it was a month ago (below).
The old saying is “knee high by the fourth of July.” Do you have a guess as to when the corn will actually reach knee-high, and as to how tall it will be on Independence Day?
