Five Fun Family Vacation Activities Your Kids Will Love
Ah, vacation time is here again. Have you been planning yours? I sat with the atlas open yesterday, dreaming of places to go and things to do if we can get away. My ideas had a big range of activities; there are so many different possibilities for vacations! The folks at Twittermoms must have had the same idea, because they’re collecting ideas from fellow vacation dreamers. If you’d like to participate, follow this link.
So, what was I dreaming of? These are my vacation ideas, all of which my kids would love. Now, if I only had the time and money to do all of them!
- National Parks. One of the possibilities I mapped out yesterday was a 5,000-mile, 17-day trip to the Southwest U.S., where we’d visit six national parks: Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Death Valley, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Arches. Each is magnificent in its own way. What a wonder to be able to see the beauty of our country!

- Theme Parks. It seems that all of my friends have taken their kids on a Disney World vacation. I mapped out a route to Orlando to see the possibilities of spending time with the famous mouse. This is one that kids would definitely love, but my pocketbook has a harder time absorbing.

- History. Even young children can enjoy history. We went to Philadelphia when our oldest child was 7 and our youngest 3. Visiting Independence Hall and Washington Crossing were memorable, and the first-hand experience with historic sites is helping them when they have history discussions in school. Boston, Washington, D.C., and Colonial Williamsburg are on our future history-tour list. But even if we can’t make it to those far-away and famous historical areas, our state historical society has an excellent set of sites that we enjoy visiting.

- Water. A trip to the beach, or if you live inland, to a lake, can be relaxing for parents and fun for kids. Our extended family stays at a resort each summer, where the kids play with their cousins and splash in the lake to their hearts’ content.

- Oddball. Kids will love a stop at the World’s Largest Buffalo or the World’s Largest Twine Ball or the Eiffel Tower with a cowboy hat. If a road trip is in our plans, you can be sure we’re going to find some quirky stops along the way.

Our kids love being outside and enjoying nature. Martha’s Vineyard has many beautiful beaches, scenic farmland, alpaca farms, working farms, and of course, restaurants and shops. We even found a spot where they could find live starfish.
