iPod and iPad Apps for On the Road

There are many parents who swear by a DVD player in the car to keep their kids entertained on a road trip, and there are plenty of kids who own a Nintendo DS that keeps them occupied in the car.  We own neither, but I do have an iPod Touch that the kids are allowed to use under very specific circumstances:  namely that only one of them is along for the trip.  On the rare occasion where I am taking a single child to a doctor’s appointment instead of dragging along the other three, as is usually the case, they’re allowed to use my iPod.

I have several apps that I use for my own purposes, and I’ve picked up a few kids’ games as well.  Most of them are freebies and my kids don’t know any different.  Some of their favorites are Memoryze, Bejeweled, and The Wheels on the Bus.  We also use the State Plate Hunt app to keep track of license plates we find along our journeys.  And yes, we use the iPod for music in the car as well.

With the ever-increasing list of apps that are available, it’s hard to sift through and find the good ones.  I’ve been following a new blog that will help that, however: www.bestkidsapps.com.  Looking for iPhone apps for kids (or iPod or iPad for that matter)?  They’ll give you some ideas.  The site is run by some travel-writing moms who know about traveling, and kids, and will do their best to help you find the gems in the sea of apps.

Do you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad?  Do you let your kids use it?  Which apps are your favorites for kids?

I’m participating in a contest at Best Kids Apps, a blog about iPhone apps for kids, for a chance to win an iPad.  Want a chance at it? Follow the link for more information!
