From the Archives: Alexander Ramsey House in St. Paul, Minnesota

As I look back, there are some places that we would have enjoyed much more if we’d waited until the kids were a little older before visiting.  Some of those sites, like the Alexander Ramsey House, we’ve returned to, and it’s amazing what a difference a few years can make.

When we first went to the Alexander Ramsey House, our kids were age 18 months to 6.  This was simply too young for a white-gloved, no-touching tour of a beautiful Victorian house.  Two years later, however, we returned for a special children’s day event, and it was much better for the kids, who could manage the tour as well as enjoy the activities of the day.

The Minnesota Historical Society’s Alexander Ramsey House offers some excellent programs around the holidays and a popular “Finishing School for Young Ladies” in the summer.  We’ll go back again, but it’s definitely better for older children than for preschoolers.
