From the Archives: Art Institute of Chicago
Because I didn’t grow up going to art museums, I’m still learning my way around them, and the thought of taking young children to an art museum is more daunting than taking them to a zoo or children’s museum. Many art museums, however, are helping families to feel comfortable by having family education areas or special programs for children like the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ Family Days.
The Art Institute of Chicago has one such family area. It was called the Kraft Education Center when we were there, but it appears to be called simply The Family Room now. Our kids were young when we went to the Art Institute, so it was nice to let them relax and do some of their own artwork before going out into the museum galleries. We chose Grant Wood’s American Gothic as a scavenger-hunt piece, and the kids were delighted when we found it.
We like to take the kids to art museums; our family is growing together in our appreciation for art as we visit different museums.
