From the Archives: The Bakken Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Lesser-known museums are often tops on our list to visit. Their admission price is generally very reasonable, and we don’t have to fight the crowds that the bigger museums attract. One that we really like in Minneapolis is the Bakken Museum. I’ve taken the kids there twice, once on my own, and again with my parents and husband. There are several hands-on activities that the kids really liked.
The Bakken has also partnered with the Minnesota History Center for some of the electrical exhibits in the Ben Franklin exhibit, so if you’ve liked the electricity experiments at the History Center, you’ll like the Bakken.
The Bakken Museum is located in a beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis; when we go back again we’ll leave time to walk or bike around the lake.
If you’re visiting the Bakken Museum, you may want to check out a Museum Adventure Pass from a metro-area library for two free admissions. The Bakken Museum has participated in this program for several years. The Bakken Museum is also a member of the ASTC Passport program. See my page on Frugal Travel for more information about memberships.
The Bakken Museum is also on Facebook and Twitter.

This is our spring break week; today we spent the afternoon at the Bakken and had a fun time! Later this week we’re planning a trip on the Northstar Line into downtown. I stumbled upon your blog while looking for info about the Foshay museum. (You’re right; it’s very difficult to find info online, so I appreciate your blog entry with the museum phone number etc.) Thanks for the Target Center tour tip. We might try that out too if we have time.
Thanks for the note, Heather; I’m glad you’ve found useful information here. Happy adventuring!
