From the Archives: Adventures on a Budget
The second post I wrote for this blog was called Adventures on a Budget. The advice contained there really hasn’t changed. We still use our museum memberships extensively; the reciprocal admission has let us see museums in Texas and Pennsylania, and everywhere in between, without a big expense for us.
We still try to travel quite frugally, often on a budget of $150-$200 a day including food and hotel. Because of this budget, we find it hard to go to well-known places like Disney World because of the cost. We find a lot of fun in lesser-known attractions that are less expensive.
How do you save money when you go to fun places?

We make liberal use of museum memberships and always look for reciprocal discounts, too.
We don’t have kids, so bypassing the big theme-type parks doesn’t bother us, but I think I’d still like the lesser known attractions even if we did have a bigger family. The smaller museums and odd roadside attractions are far more interesting to us, and there are often great stories to go with the stop–small town volunteer docents usually tell the best stories about what you’re seeing!

We like to take day-trips to nearby towns and visit their historic districts. It’s free to take a walk, snap some photos of interesting buildings, and tell my young daughter that the old courthouse is actually a princess castle!
We usually make a stop for ice cream too. We end up paying for gas and $3-4 for ice cream/snacks.

Budget is such a big consideration for me. It’s difficult to not exceed without being labeled as killjoy. So the allowance for unforeseen expenses saves the day.
