Keeping Up with Travels with Children

When I started this site two and a half years ago, it was in response to people who were shocked that I would take my four little ones (then ages 1, 3, 4, and 6) to fun places.  I began writing as a way to let other parents know that it’s possible to visit new places with young children, and even enjoy it.  My first post, in October of 2007, was about a day trip to Minneapolis.  It wasn’t our first adventure, but it’s one I still remember.

Since those early days when I was thrilled to get three or four people per day stopping by, the site has grown, as have my children.  We no longer pack diaper bags and haul strollers and portacribs on our adventures.  In some ways, it’s easier as the kids get older.  On the other hand, we now deal with more food allergy issues, so we’ve had to become more creative when eating on the road.  Last year, we bought a used RV and entered the world of camping, another twist to our family adventures.

All along the way, I’ve been writing.  I write about the good and the not-so-good, places we’ve been, places we want to go, and the joys and difficulties of traveling with a larger-than-average family.

To all of you who have been faithful readers, thank you.  The people visiting and commenting on the site are what keep me going.  If I help other families to find fun with their kids in the places close to home, the out-of-the-way roadside oddities, or local events, I’ve done what I set out to do.  I don’t want anyone to think that they can’t go to new places with their kids, or that the only places that are fun are across the country and cost thousands of dollars.  We can find fun anywhere if we just look for it.

Now, to the reason for this post.  Many of you stop by frequently to see what’s new at Travels with Children, but did you know that there are other ways to keep up with the site?

  • If you use a “feed reader” such as Bloglines or Google Reader, you can subscribe to the Travels with Children feed.
  • If you’re on twitter, follow me at @minnemom.  You’ll see notifications of the newest Travels with Children posts, plus whatever else is crossing my mind.  Sometimes useful, sometimes witty, sometimes mundane, you never know what you’ll find on Twitter.  If you follow me, be sure to send me a note so that I know you’re a blog reader and I will follow you back.
  • New! Become a fan of the Travels with Children Facebook page.  You’ll be the first to know when I’ve written something new, as well as get additional information that doesn’t fit well into a blog post.  We’ve already had some interesting discussions on the Facebook page, and I invite you to become a fan and join in the conversation.
  • As always, please leave comments on blog posts when you have something to say.  As well as I think I know my “backyard,” I’ve learned of some great new places through reader comments.  I love researching new places, so keep the ideas coming, as well as leaving feedback on places we’ve visited.

Above all, thank you for reading.  It’s been so much fun to share our adventures with the world and to become a part of the travel-blogging community with other parents who enjoy traveling with their children.

Happy travels!

Linda

I absolutely LOVE your site! What a great idea. As Caretaker at gardendwellers FARM, along with my husband Barry, we work hard at making sure there are things for ‘kids’ of ALL ages to do at our herb farm. We’d like to personally invite you and your family to visit us next time you’re in NE North Dakota. My best friend has 4 children ages 6 to 14 and I certainly am going to recommend she follow your posts. Thanks again.
