Mystery Photo Friday: Cotton Ball Field?
Our visit to North Dakota this weekend has not been reminscent of usual October visits. Usually we enjoy fall colors, picking apples, and playing outside. This time our visit began with some of the worst winter driving I’ve encountered in the past few years. (We drove 3700 miles over Christmas last year with no problems, but a 350-mile trip to North Dakota in October made up for it.)
When we got close to my parents’ house, this is what we saw along the side of the road. Can you guess what it is?
This is a little closer. Can you tell now?
Here’s the final hint.
That’s right, this is a sunflower field covered with about 4″ of October snow. Usually the sunflowers have been harvested before much snow flies, but this year is proving to be a unique challenge for a lot of farmers in the upper Midwest.

Wow!!! It looks like a cotton field! It seems we have completely skipped Fall season.

great shots, and I couldn’t help thinking — do you know that cotton is also known as Mississippi snow?

Kerry, I didn’t know cotton was called Mississippi snow. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful! I would have never guessed those were sunflower fields. It looks like a field of perfectly shaped snowballs itching for a fight!

Wow, I wouldn’t have guessed it was a sunflower field. I feel for you, I am not a great fan of snow although it looks beautiful. Great shots.

Very surreal! I never would have guessed sunflowers…quite a dramatic end to their season…straight from summer to winter, yikes!
I too would never have thought they were sunflowers. My neighbor had sunflowers and they are enormous, granted they were in Costa Rica and never saw snow, but they get so small in the snow.
Wow! They hinted on television at snow here last night…I don’t think it’s quite cold enough, although close enough to see your breathe when you’re outside at night. You snow looks like that sloppy, slush that is difficult to drive in…hope the roads clear up a bit for you soon…

Noo- I can’t believe that’s snow. You must have faked that shot.
