Photo Friday: Something Unexpected
Even when doing something as mundane as running errands, an alternate route can turn up something unexpected. That was the case this summer when I chose a road that was more winding and had a slower speed limit than our usual route for a day of shopping.
I’d been on this road before, a few years ago, so it surprised me to drive past a sign indicating a waterfall ahead. Then I remembered reading the story of Minnemishinona Falls, which had previously been on private land but had recently been turned over to the county and opened up for public viewing.
And of course we stopped to see it.
We had a very dry summer here in Minnesota, so there was not a lot of water flowing over the falls, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
Unlike nearby Minneopa Falls, where you can walk down alongside the creek and get up close to the falls, this area has only a path with an overlook from the top. Still, if you’re traveling near Mankato, Minnesota, detour to Nicollet County Road 41, the “Judson Bottom Road” that parallels the Minnesota River from North Mankato to south of Nicollet, and enjoy the scenic drive. And of course, stop and see the waterfall.

What a beautiful little spot! I can’t imagine having that on my very own private property! Glad it is available for the public to see!
It’s a lovely spot! I see what you mean about the dry summer there is very little water falling, but what an amazing fealing to find unexpected beautiful places.

Lovely spot even though the waterfall was a trickle. It must have been a dry summer.

I love the way you can discover a new place just by altering your normal route a little. Beautiful photo!
