Mystery Photo Friday: North Redwood, Minnesota
This is North Redwood, Minnesota.
Once upon a time, something kind of big started here. Can you guess what it was?
Here’s a hint.
Does this help?
Here’s the answer.
Yes, the Sears Roebuck company got its start in tiny North Redwood, Minnesota, with a man and an idea (and a bunch of watches he needed to sell somehow).

My Grandma grew up in Redwood Falls, and their family farm was between Redwood and Olivia. There is a little supper club, I think called the valley in North Redwood that has great home style cooking. I think my grandparents often ordered the walleye–a great place to have a family dinner. You can’t miss it in N Redwood. I have great memories of dining there with family.

The Valley supper club was where my husband first met my parents!
Great series! I knew Sears started in a small town, but I didn’t know it was in Minnesota.

I love that beautiful photo at top. I was looking forward to guessing what the really big thing was, but I would NEVER had guess Sears.

I like how you laid out this post and let us discover the answers along the way. I was bending over my computer reading the fine print just like I would have been doing in person! Go Sears!

I love finding a little piece of history in a totally unexpected place (like finding Annie Oakley’s grave in Ohio).
When we took one of the boat cruises in Chicago this summer, one of the tour guides was poking fun at the Sears Tower’s new name…and said he didn’t think he’d ever call it anything but the Sears Tower.
I understand..I still slip and call Macy’s here Hudson’s once in a while (and that was two names ago!).

My kids were appalled that the Sears Tower had a new name. Macy’s is still Dayton’s to me, also two names ago. Macy’s is in New York in my mind.
And now the Metrodome is something like Mall of America Field.
It all changes too much and too fast, its seems.
