Sever’s Corn Maze in Shakopee, MN

Ah, the irony. I live surrounded by corn fields that I could easily get lost in, but this past weekend we chose to drive into the Cities to get lost in a corn maze.

Sever’s Corn Maze is adjacent to Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, Minnesota.  This 14-acre corn maze changes themes each year; this year pirates are the focus.  It is billed as “America’s Largest Corn Maze” and has a lot of twists and turns through the maze.

Sever’s maze isn’t one where there’s only one exit; in fact, you could be in and out in just a few minutes if you wanted to.  But that wouldn’t be any fun, would it?  To add to the fun, Sever’s Corn Maze has a series of pirate info signs throughout the maze, lettered A to Z, that create a scavenger hunt of sorts.  A map is given at the beginning of the maze, and it was fun to hone our navigation skills as well as to see which signs had the necessary picture of Sever the Pirate so we’d be in the running for a weekly drawing.

I’ve been in a few other corn mazes before, and I definitely liked having a map of the place.  Being lost in a big cornfield with no idea which way is out can be disconcerting.  If you prefer to wander on your own, that’s your choice, but having a map was definitely a plus for me.

It took us about 45 minutes to find all of the stations in the corn maze.  However, that’s not all you get for the admission price.

Sever’s also has many other activities included in the $11 admission price.  A bale maze and kids’ corn maze are fun for the younger set, and kids and adults can jump in a big corn pit under a tent.  (Note–they’ll come out dusty, and it’s not for those with breathing issues.)

There are pig races and magic shows and other entertainment, as well as concessions and pumpkins for sale.  For an additional charge, there’s a big slide, camel rides, hay rides, and an exotic animal petting zoo.  And for all the things at Sever’s Corn Maze, my daughter’s favorite was the Rainbow play system swingset.

We were a little worried about the corn maze being muddy, but the soil is quite sandy and it wasn’t too bad, even on the day after a rain.  The stalks in the maze are nicely cut to the ground, so it’s a smooth walk, and there are restrooms and a water station on the far side of the maze.

Admission is $11 per person, but there’s a $1 coupon available on Sever’s Corn Maze website.  Children three and under are free, and there’s no charge for parking.

Note:  We were given free tickets to visit Sever’s Corn Maze.
