Numbered Days: North Almont Elevators

My photograph of the North Almont grain elevators was taken in early June, 2009.  I stopped the car on the side of the road to take the photo just because I thought they were beautiful against the North Dakota landscape.

I finally posted the picture last Friday, only to find that the elevators had been demolished a week earlier.  Annika Nelson, a native of Sims with whom I’ve been corresponding, alerted me to the fact that they’re no longer standing.

It’s the loss of a landmark for people in the area, who have seen the elevators standing for all of these years.

And it’s a reminder for me to stop by the roadside and snap that photo instead of waiting for the next trip.  Take advantage of a free day to visit something I haven’t seen before instead of waiting for next year.  Some things will still be there tomorrow, but others may not be.  You just never know.

Oh, what a great shot!! And you are so right about taking that shot when you see it. You can always delete it later if it turns out to not be what you thought it was but it is really hard to recreate a shot when it is not even available anymore or you are hundreds of miles down the road and may never go that way again. Savor the moment!!

So sad to know the North Almont grain elevators are gone. We went by the area in May of 2011 and was shock to see them gone.
Gone with them is the land mark of my child hood play ground. As young children me and my four siblings played around the railroad track and the elevators. My oldest sister attented the North Almont school and we live in the box car house that still stand in the now pasture. Our nearest neighbor was my dads uncle Clarence and Aunt Regina and Uncle Leo and Aunt Arlie. place to We will miss the elevators because of the memories we have and the sign of seeing them on our way to Almont tell we were almost home
