Farmfest, Here We Come!

We can tell by the seed variety signs going up in the fields, announcing to the world that this nice-looking corn is a Pioneer number, or that those perfect soybeans are the product of seed from DeKalb.  We know it by the flood of mail, inviting us to a particular booth for a free gift or a bag of popcorn.  We know it by the ads in the ag magazines and newspapers, and by the billboards along the highways, and by the magnet on our refrigerator:  Farmfest is almost here.

To those not from the agricultural community, Farmfest and other farm shows must seem just a little strange.  They’re a little hard to explain.  I suppose one could liken it to the exhibits area at a professional conference, or the place where bloggers got free stuff at BlogHer.  Except that it’s outdoors.  And the profession it’s designed for is farmers.

Farmfest is held annually at the Gilfillan Estate, near Redwood Falls and Morton, Minnesota.  For three days in August, a former farm field that now has permanent gravel streets and Morton buildings is transformed into a small city of booths and tents touting products, offering seminars, selling refreshments, and offering a variety of products and services to those in the agricultural community.

We’ve been going to Farmfest since we were married.  One year I had to miss it because of work obligations.  We’ve gone with babies in strollers, or found a sitter and left them at home.  Last year, our kids didn’t get to go and they were very sad about it.  This year, it will be a family affair.

Yes, Farmfest is family-friendly.  From free admission to kids under 18 (with adults only $8), to free popcorn, to games and giveaways at the various booths, kids like Farmfest.  Maybe it’s the fact that there’s a tootsie roll for them every three feet that keeps them begging to come back.

Last year at Farmfest, we had the privilege of seeing our governor and our Senate candidates face off in a debate.  I’ve attended seminars on growing grapes.  Entertainment is offered throughout the day, so if the sun is too hot or you’ve done too much walking, there’s a chance for a break from it all.

For a farmer, Farmfest is a big shopping mall.  I’ll admit, I kind of dread the years when my husband is looking for a particular piece of equipment, because he will visit each and every dealer seeking out information and asking questions.  It takes forever.  Usually Hubby and I stick together throughout the day, but other couples split up to see what interests them and then meet at the appointed time for dinner.  (Yes, folks, dinner is the noon meal.  I recommend the hot beef sandwiches at the church booth in the northwest corner of the grounds.)

Are non-farmers allowed at Farmfest?  Of course!  If you’ve ever wanted to give your kids a chance to climb on a combine, this is it.

If you go to Farmfest, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Wear sunscreen and take a good hat.  There’s not always a lot of shade to be found.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting dusty (if it’s dry) or muddy (if it rains).
  • If you bring a stroller, bigger wheels are easier for navigating than tiny ones.  Wagons are also popular.  If your tots don’t need it, you can use it to haul your loot.
  • Bring address labels so you can be efficient in signing up for giveaways.  There are several kids’ giveaways as well, so put the kids’ names on some labels as well.
  • Don’t be afraid to sit down in a tent and grab a glass of water or a bag of popcorn.  Strike up a conversation with the representative and you might learn something new.

Farmfest runs for three days each August.  This year, it’s August 4, 5, and 6.  Will I see you there?

This reminds me of the Valley City Winter Show, I used to go to as a kid!

Karen, maybe I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one with a big sunhat, trying to keep four kids from eating all the popcorn. :-)

Although there are farm shows around the country, I don’t see any in the LA area. Too bad–I’ll bet you’d love it!
