Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Unit
You may remember my Photo Friday of Theodore Roosevelt National Park a few weeks ago. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is unique in that it has two sections–the South Unit, at Medora, and the North Unit, about 80 miles farther north, near Watford City.
The North Unit is actually more rugged and arguably even more beautiful than the South Unit.
Instead of a loop, there’s a down-and-back road that takes about an hour and a half to drive.
When you purchase a pass to the park, it is good at both units for seven days, so if you have the time while in North Dakota, you really should investigate the north unit as well.
We picked up Junior Ranger Guides for the kids, and one of the requirements for completion was to take a hike in the park.
It was good that we got out of the car and onto the path, or I never would have known that CACTI GROW IN NORTH DAKOTA!

Really nice pictures. I like the markings on the rocks, and the new cacti discovery!

We’ve only seen the south unit, and that for only a few hours. We fully intend to go back and the north unit will be on our must do list.

Can’t say that I’ve been there. It looks magnificent but so desolate.

I remember being in the Badlands and experiencing the same shock you did when I looked down and saw cacti! I know I posted one of those cactus photos on my blog when I did a series of Dakotas posts.
Who knew?
We were so taken with the short time we spent at the south unit of this park, that it was one of the major reasons we want to go back and spend more time in the Dakotas.
The north unit does look beautiful, and I’d love to get out and do one of the hikes.

It’s an incredible perspective to see all of the layers of rocks on those cliffs. These types of scenes make me want to take a crash course in geology!
