Chateau de Mores in Medora, ND
As part of Children’s Day in Medora, the Chateau de Mores historic site offers special tours on Wednesdays, led by costumed interpreters who are “working” in various parts of the house. This is an interesting way for kids (and adults) to see the Chateau, which, although called a “cabin” by the de Mores family, is actually a very large home.
The Marquis de Mores came to Dakota Territory in 1883 to find his fortune in the cattle industry; the town of Medora is named after his wife. The 26 rooms of this summer home hosted guests such as Theodore Roosevelt. Many of the furnishings now on display are original to the home.
A new visitor center opened recently and serves as a museum, ticket office, and gift shop for the Chateau. From there, a walk up the hill to the Chateau itself allows visitors to step back in time to 1880’s life in western North Dakota.
