World’s Largest Buffalo in Jamestown, North Dakota

Did you know that North Dakota is the biggest when it comes to production of spring wheat, durum wheat, sunflowers, barley, dry edible beans, pinto beans, canola, flaxseed, barley, honey, lentils, and navy beans?  Bet you didn’t know so much of your food came from North Dakota!

North Dakota is known for a few other big things, however:  The World’s Largest Sandhill Crane, World’s Largest Holstein Cow (coming soon), and of course the World’s Largest Buffalo.

The World’s Largest Buffalo has been a fixture in Jamestown, ND, since 1959. Many adults (myself included) will remember being photographed there as children. I had forgotten how big the buffalo really is.

As it approached 50 years of age, the buffalo was beginning to show its age, and was restored in 2007 with help from the Hampton Inns Save a Landmark program.

If you stop to see the World’s Largest Buffalo (and you should!), make some time to walk through the Pioneer Village and National Buffalo Museum as well.

Then add the buffalo to the list of really big things you’ve visited.

The kids heights really show the scale of the buffalo. And it does go well with the largest Crane. wonder what is next on the list. looking forward to it.

I was wondering why you didn’t post the picture of the buffalo the other day. Now it all makes sense…

Yup, he looks the same as when we saw him 2 years ago! Although it was earlier in the day and overcast when we were there…he’s still a -big- beastie, anyway!
