  • Numbered Days: Alexander Ramsey House in St. Paul, MN

In light of possible closures of several Minnesota Historical Society locations, we’re on a mission to visit as many as we can in May and June.Yesterday we attended the May Day program at the Alexander Ramsey House in St. Paul.  Though not a free program, we got a discount as MNHS members.  The program included a tour of the house, and since we were the only ones at our tour time, our guide was excellent in highlighting things the kids would be interested in and bypassing some of the other details.
  • Numbered Days: Sibley House Historic Site in Mendota, MN
Posted on Sunday, May 10th, 2009 in Historic Sites – Comments: (2)
Because it’s on the MNHS possible closure list but mostly because they were hosting a great archaeology program this weekend, we stopped at the Sibley House Historic Site in Mendota on Saturday.Although we didn’t have time for a guided tour of the fur-trade area buildings, we very much enjoyed the archaeology dig for kids.  Each child got a square in a dirt-filled box and was taught how to dig for artifacts, all of which have been found on the grounds of the Sibley House.

I had the kids loaded in our minivan to take them to school yesterday, but before leaving, I needed to talk to my husband, who happened to be working behind the barn.I drove over to him, pulling onto the grass in an area that was used as a road when there were animals on this farm, but apparently the kids didn’t remember that.

  • Big Hereford Steer in Plainview, MN

My kids have traveled enough with me now to know that we stop and/or turn around for two things:  historic markers and really big things. And so it was that as we were driving through Plainview, Minnesota, the kids and I all gasped at once as we saw this:My poor husband, who was driving, didn’t know what we were getting at until we specifically told him we had to turn around so I could take a picture of it.
  • World’s Largest Twine Ball in Darwin, Minnesota
Posted on Friday, May 1st, 2009 in Roadside Attractions – Comments: (10)
This one’s for the Photo Friday folks.  While they all have beautiful travel photos of places like Peru and China and Australia and Tibet, I have (drum roll please) . . . the World’s Largest Twine Ball from Darwin, Minnesota.I suppose I should qualify this, because apparently there’s a twine ball in Kansas that’s bigger, but it took a group effort to keep it in the record books.
  • Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

One of the highlights of our Philadelphia trip was Independence Hall.  Being in the room where George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and so many others made history was an awesome experience. To visit Independence Hall, you must get tickets at the Independence Visitor Center, about 2 blocks away.  It is advisable to get your tickets early in the day, as there are a limited number available.
