World’s Largest Twine Ball in Darwin, Minnesota

This one’s for the Photo Friday folks.  While they all have beautiful travel photos of places like Peru and China and Australia and Tibet, I have (drum roll please) . . . the World’s Largest Twine Ball from Darwin, Minnesota.

I suppose I should qualify this, because apparently there’s a twine ball in Kansas that’s bigger, but it took a group effort to keep it in the record books.  The Darwin twine ball was woven by one man.

Since we were there when the museum and gift shop were closed, so we’ll probably go back again some day.  There’s a nice park across the street from the twine ball, so a day trip and picnic with the kids wouldn’t be out of the question.

Some may think these roadside attractions are silly, but I think they show a lot for people’s different interests and passions.  One person collects art; another rolls twine; and someone else makes Carhenge.  It’s what makes the world go around.

I love the cheesy roadside attractions.
It’s fun to look at beautiful photos from exotic places, but I think it’s more fun to look at something I might actually have a chance to see in person…and something that really reflects what was important to a particular person or place. Tell me you have a “mankiller clam”, or the world’s largest hockey stick…and I’ll probably go look at it…wait, I’ve actually seem those things!

Just saw an article about similiar attractions on CNN so you’re trendy! It would be fun to learn more about it’s maker.

twine works great. You expect to see amazing pictures from China, but who ever thought that someone would actually spend doing a world’s largest twine ball! I love these peculiar tourist stop overs!

Y’see, the thing is, my older son would probably prefer to go see a ball of twine in Minnesota than to be regularly schlepped half-way around the world to visit relatives.
Maybe we’ll have to trade kids sometime :)

That’s wonderful! That’s Americana! China’s got lots of interesting things, but I’m pretty sure China doesn’t have a large ball of twine. ;)

Every time I’m about to go on a road trip, I say let’s see if we can find the largest ball of twine. And hey, you found it. It’s a little further out than most of my road trips from Cali though.
