National Canal Museum in Easton, Pennsylvania
While our time at the Crayola Factory was disappointing, there was a bright spot in our admission price: the National Canal Museum. Both the Crayola Factory and the National Canal Museum are in the same building, and there’s one admission price for both.
If you’ve heard of the Erie Canal (or the Ohio and Erie Canal, which we’d explored in Ohio), the National Canal Museum will bring it to life.
Kids can take a boat through a lock and dam system in the waterworks area, or learn about ropes and pulleys and other science that was used to make the canals work. The museum, while not large, is very child-friendly and allows several hands-on activities. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Our only disappointment was that we visited in the winter and couldn’t take an actual canal boat ride just a few blocks away. If you go in the summer, this would be a great piece of living history to experience.
If you’re headed to the Crayola Factory, save time for the National Canal Museum. You may find that you enjoy it more than the Crayola Factory itself.
