Adding Maryland to the List
Do you collect states? By that, I mean, do you keep track of how many states you’ve been to, with the ultimate goal of someday visiting all 50?
One of the parts about our Christmas trip that was exciting for the kids was the number of states we would travel through and to. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania–those were easy to come by, legitimate stops. When we added the Statue of Liberty to the trip, that included New Jersey and New York.
But Maryland? Not on our route.
Until . . .
We made it part of our route.
You see, Gettysburg is only about 15 miles from the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. So after completing our stops in Gettysburg we went out of our way, finding some back roads, and to the delight of my husband, spotting a farmer combining corn on the 23rd of December. On these roads, we headed south until we saw:
We continued another 1/2 mile, then promptly turned around and headed for our next stop.
Our kids can now say they’ve been to Maryland. They don’t have to mention that it was for less than five minutes.

I totally collect states. I once crossed over to Arkansas from Memphis so I could knock it off the list and I did the samething for Michagin. I fully intend on spendig more time in them later because they each have National Parks but I just had to hit them since I was so close.
Well – our blog’s sidebar is a collection of Places – that we have been or want to go to. Maryland is a good one – Baltimore is a beautiful city with so much history and fun things to do. Next time make a trip out of just Baltimore and Washington D.C.

The D.C. area is on our list for a full vacation when the kids are a little older. We’ll spend more time in Maryland then!
Oh yeah, been there, done that!
North Dakota wasn’t necessarily on the most direct route when we went out west, but I insisted go through that way because neither of us had even been there!

We definitely collect states…and countries for that matter! It is fun to be able to say that we have been to so many states! When we go to a new place, I like to see what is near it so that I can add to my list. When I am retired, I imagine myself having one of those maps on the back of my RV all colored in with the states that we have traveled through!!!

Last summer we collected states but in a different way! We made a list of license plates! After a 7 day trip trough 5 states and one Canadian Province, we collected 40 states and 6 provinces! Not bad, eh?
We collected license plates on our trip out east as well. There’s even a neat little iPhone app that made it really easy.
If I recall, we got 45 states and 3 provinces on our 17-day trip.
And we learned that a lot of states need to make their state’s name much clearer on their license plates.
