Global Hotdish Variety Show at the Minnesota History Center

Global Hotdish 1

Ah, hotdish, that Minnesota favorite that all the rest of the world calls “casserole.”  It’s a mix of ingredients put into one tasty dish.

This winter, the Minnesota Historical Society has created an entertainment mixture of its own, dubbed the Global Hotdish Variety Show.  This series of three performances, each with a different mix of performers showcasing the variety of culture in Minnesota, seeks to entertain and educate about the varied people we have in our state.

We attended the first of the three shows, on Saturday, January 24, with our neighbor and her three children.  We sat up front, with the seven kids aged 3-9 sitting next to each other, and they were captivated the entire time.  From the Wacky Chickens (whom the kids remembered as one of the few highlights at our visit to the Renaissance Festival) to the Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater’s puppet show (which my five-year-old loved because of the castanets and the flowers in their hair) to the Taiko drummers with their grace and style, everyone had a favorite.

In between acts, the show’s host, T. Mychael Rambo along with the host band and “Dr. Thunderblust,” kept the show moving along.  Audience sing-alongs and Minnesota trivia complete with prizes (and yes, that was my son who knew that the State Fruit is the Honeycrisp Apple), and a time to go up and dance on stage, kept the energy level high and added to the family-friendliness of the show.  King Boreas and his nemesis, Vulcan, from the St. Paul Winter Carnival, even made a surprise appearance.

The variety of performers was excellent, and the show was very family-friendly.  The hour and a half program was done all too soon, but since tickets include admission to the History Center, we were able to continue our day in the exhibit area.

Tickets for the show are $12 for adults (with a $2 discount for MNHS members) and $5 for children ages 6 to 17. New recipes of Global Hotdish will be served up on February 28 and March 28.  We would not hesitate to return.

Disclaimer: The Minnesota Historical Society provided complimentary tickets for our family to attend this event.

That sounds like a lot of fun. It’s hard to find events that are enjoyable for both adults and kids. Wish I lived closer – I’d definitely enjoy it! :)

I have fond memories of Minnesota hot dishes and was also looking for some kind of recipe extravaganza. This looks just as fun though.

Wish we lived closer, and kudos to you for scoring free tickets. The state of Minnesota owes you for all your great publicity.
