Notes from the Road, Day 8
Lesson learned today: The reenactment of Washington Crossing the Delaware doesn’t always take place on the river. Due to swift water, it’s sometimes a bridge crossing. We had split up at the last minute due to restless kids and somehow ended up with half of us having a good view of the speeches and cannons, and the other half being right up front as the troops crossed the bridge.
The kids were excited that Santa found his way to our hotel room. Who knew a new book and underwear could bring so much excitement?
We drove through Valley Forge, but were disappointed that the audio tour CD wouldn’t work in our car player. (We’d had the same problem with the Gettysburg CD, but I had put that on the ipod before our trip so we had a backup.
It was a beautiful, sunny Christmas Day in Pennsylvania. There won’t be too many years that the kids get to play freeze tag outside on Christmas.
Food was interesting, as we knew it would be on Christmas Day. We had a big breakfast at the hotel, a light lunch in the car from convenience-store items, and happily found a family restaurant open near our hotel for a mid-afternoon supper.
We’ve found people in this area to be very helpful in providing hints about things to do, how to get places, and so on. There’s a lot of “Minnesota nice” to be found on the East coast as well. What we’re not used to are the narrow streets. We’re seeing some beautiful things, though, and it’s exciting to be immersed in so much history.
Now, after watching A Christmas Story, we’re off to an evening Christmas Day service at church.
Favorite sight of the day–the people who brought provisions to tailgate after the reenactment rather than sitting in traffic waiting to get out of the area. Waiting 20 minutes in a park area is so much more relaxing than waiting 20 minutes in traffic!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Day.

Sounds like a great day! I enjoy reading your posts everyday, you make traveling with kids sound like such a breeze. Can’ wait to hear about tomorrow.
Kandice’s last blog post..Wordless Wednesday – Happy Whatever!
Hi everyone!
It was a joy to worship with you the last 2 nights! I loved the enthusiasm of your children to sing the Christmas songs — and even the whistles were especially delightful!
Thanks for sharing your website and your love for the Lord Jesus!
