Hockey, Hockey, Hockey! U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, MN

When we visited the World’s Largest Hockey Stick in Eveleth, Minnesota, we also stopped at another hockey venue: the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum.

Many great U.S. hockey players have come from Eveleth in particular and the Iron Range in general, and the Hall of Fame honors local-born athletes as well as those from around the country. It highlights local teams, colleges, and professional hockey players.

The actual Hall of Fame area is on the first floor, along with a film about the 1980 miracle team. Upstairs are historic collections of hockey uniforms, equipment, memorabilia, and even a Zamboni.

The kids had the most fun on the top level, where there were interactive areas allowing them to wield a stick and play against the computer for speed and accuracy, as well as hockey-themed arcade games.

Although the museum was interesting, I’m not sure it warranted the $22 in admission for our family. (Thankfully, the three under six were free.) Perhaps if we were bigger hockey fans we would have stayed longer and felt it was worthwhile.

Still, if you’re in Eveleth, the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame might be worth a stop. There’s a strong tradition of hockey on the Iron Range, and it was interesting to see how the sport has changed over the years.

When I moved to MN I got a crash course in hockey! After college I taught at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School which has a huge hockey program, and I had to become an instant fan. It is such a fun sport, though, and the museum looks interesting.

Was there anything about women’s hockey there?

We were through Eveleth so late at night, and left so early the next morning, when we there that the museum wasn’t open.
I’m sure we’d love it as we’re such huge hockey fans.

I’ve always loved watching hockey because it -moves- so quickly. We watch a lot of college and junior hockey here.
