Photo Friday: Wacootah Overlook, Mountain Iron, MN
On a recent trip to Minnesota’s Iron Range, we stopped at several mine overlooks, including the Wacootah Overlook near Mountain Iron. Not only could we see for miles,
but the mine views were very interesting.
See how small the trucks look?
They’re not small trucks by any means.
This is another mine, several miles away.
This is the taconite processing factory, I guess. We were given souvenir taconite pellets at one of the visitor centers we went to.
This was a part of our state I hadn’t seen before, and it was very interesting to see.

My boys would LOVE this! That truck is FANTASTIC! Photo Friday – how fun!!
Fall colors are the BEST!! Such beautiful photographs. And that truck looks monstrous!!! I can only imagine what it must look like when you’re standing next to it.
Thanks for sharing.

This is both beautiful and creepy. The fall colors and vistas are spectacular (especially as it is still super-brown in California now). THe huge truck is SOOOOOOO cool. It’s the reason we have kids right? so we can visit stuff like that again. To me, the change in the landscape due to the huge mines is sad and creepy. What happens when they are finished? Or after a couple days of rain. Will think about the cool, big truck.

We drove past this area on our way to Ely one winter; our boys would LOVE seeing those mines & trucks. I remember seeing trucks that big working on the Alaska-Canada highway; the wheels dwarfed our full-sized van! Nicely done photo essay.

It is pretty sobering to see the landscape changes wrought by mining in places like northern Minnesota and northern Michigan.
Still, these photos make me really wish I was “up north” right now. Peak color was probably earlier this month, though…we’re seeing a bit of color change here in southern Michigan starting this week.
Love all the pretty fall colors and views!
