Living near the Minnesota River Valley, we hear a lot about the Dakota Conflict, or Sioux Uprising. There are historic sites at various points where battles occurred, and most tell the story of the settlers and the soldiers who were posted to protect them. The Lower Sioux Agency, though, tells the story of the Sioux (Dakota) Indians and of the events that led up to the conflict from their point of view.

The museum itself is not large, but the gallery area’s displays are packed with information in an interesting and easy-to-read format. Outside, there are trails that wind among the surviving buildings and the markers of buildings that are now gone. The day we were there, it was raining, so we didn’t walk the prairie trails.

We visited during a special event about raptors, and the kids were able to see and touch several artifacts presented by a naturalist. There were also toys available that helped them learn more about eagles, hawks, and other birds.

While our visit to the Lower Sioux Agency wasn’t long, no more than 45 minutes, I learned a lot about another viewpoint of this important part of Minnesota and American history, and the kids found several things that interested them as well.

I really liked looking at the map.
